Research Goals

The purpose of this website and blog is to build up a Smart City Cyber Security Strategy through a series of key components. These components will be defined, developed and supported by resources and examples. To do this I have identified several key Research Goals which now include a 2021 update:

1] Outline the current state of smart city development, key recent projects and the consideration for cyber security strategies. This will provide a baseline for 2019 to use as a means for comparison in the coming years, maturity development and historic record against future cyber security incidents. We also intend to do some retrospective work based upon recent cyber security incidents in cities and looking back, if possible, to the security events and prior projects.

2] Through a classification and categorisation model of smart cities, develop a view of the threat landscape and all that it constitutes. This will mean the development of a classification taxonomy or ontology and its constituent parts. There are initiatives in development that will contribute to this. These include projects with Mitre, BSI, OneM2M, European Commission and US Government.

3] Define a cyber security framework for smart cities to provide cyber security strategy and transformation guidance in the engineering of protective monitoring and cyber security capabilities. A framework that pivots around a threat model that can evolve to meet the evolution and diversity of smart city as well as changes to threat landscape.

4 ] Development of a Smart City Threat Model to support the analysis of threats to systems and services and thus aid threat identification, detection and remediation. This will be linked to the research into Digital Twins.

5 ] Examine a range of threat scenarios that cover the types of motivations, objectives, vectors and targets of threat actor groups. These scenarios include City Surveillance/Big Brother, Smart Malware and Exploitation.

6] The use of Digital Twins in cyber security strategy and monitoring.
